The research focus of Dr. Lugea is in understanding the mechanisms underlying the development of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

About the Role

The candidate will support the overall program goals and strategy of the Pancreatic Research Group which may include specific laboratory activities such as assisting with maintenance and breeding of mouse colonies, administering special diets and drugs to mice, performing mouse models and in vitro models of pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer, cell culture procedures using primary and immortalized cell lines, RNA and protein analysis, immunostaining techniques and histology analysis.

Working under direct supervision, the Research Associate I performs a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects in a specific area of research. The incumbent will assist in general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents and stocking of supplies. Files and monitors documents. The Research Associate member will be able to perform routine cellular, micro- and molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to Western, Northern blot, DNA/RNA, PCR, protein extraction, cell culture, Immunohistochemistry, and staining. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of routine laboratory tasks and procedures.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed project records of experiments and results.
  • May assist with animal husbandry.
  • Maintains lab equipment and related records.
  • Transports, processes and logs samples.
  • Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information.
  • Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
  • Maintains stocks of general lab materials, and places orders for lab equipment and supplies.
  • Assists new students and fellows at the laboratory.
  • Assists in the operation of specialized equipment and machinery.
  • Observes and follows safety standards and procedures.
  • Works with live mice.
  • Performs mouse breeding procedures and genotyping.
  • Performs mouse models of pancreatitis under supervision.
  • Isolates primary cells from mouse and human pancreas.
  • Assist and performs mammalian cell culture and transfection/transduction if required.
  • Performs RNA/DNA analysis techniques (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid purification).
  • Performs protein expression analysis techniques (e.g., protein concentration determination, Western Blot, ELISA, Luminex, spectrophotometric assays, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence).
  • Assist other members of the laboratory in procuring human surgical specimens if require.
  • Assist with data analysis if required.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science related, required.

Experience and Skills:

  • Understanding of general research objectives.
  • Broad knowledge of chemistry and molecular and cellular biology experience.
  • Experience working with mice is highly desirable.
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills are essential.

Physical Demands:

Able to read papers and online documents. Able to operate standard office equipment. Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
