University of Antwerp is recruiting a Lab Manager for its Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination (CEV) which is located at Vaccinopolis, Edegem, Belgium
The CEV is a research centre of the University of Antwerp (UAntwerp), headed by Prof. Van Damme, having a long standing expertise on the assessment of new vaccines and is offering services in the field of clinical trials for vaccines. Besides ambulatory vaccine clinical trials studies, it offers CHIM (Controlled Human Infectious Model) studies with the goal to accelerate the evaluation and development of vaccine candidates. The CEV is located at Vaccinopolis, a new state-of-the-art facility from UAntwerp. Vaccinopolis has a unique 30-bed capacity under biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) conditions, allowing it to perform human challenge studies with pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2. Next to the human challenge capability, the centre offers large BSL-2 and BSL-3 lab capacity as well as an ambulatory vaccine trial unit.
For the above services, CEV is looking for a Lab Manager
Position
You are responsible for overseeing and coordinating all the activities in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 lab. Next to the processing of samples from the clinical trials, the lab houses also expanding research activities in the field of novel diagnostics and epidemiological research.
Further tasks and responsibilities
- You are responsible for the day-to-day lab operations at the BSL-2 and BSL-3 lab facility, which includes also a decentral hub of the UAntwerpen/UZA biobank.
- You are responsible for maintaining the equipment in the labs with special focus on the cold chain where all samples and IMPs are stored
- You ensure that the lab is neatly and participate in internal and external audits and inspections. You are also responsible to implement changes when and where needed based on audit/inspection findings
- You are responsible for training of the lab personnel on the various SOPs and WIs in conjunction with the head of QA
- You participate in the review of the quality documents
- You align the investment into new equipment with the Head of Operations and Head of Project Management
- You are responsible for the yearly calibration of the equipment and planning of the maintenance in conjunction with the Head of Operations
- You identify proactively potential staffing issues and discuss with the management team about potential solutions.
- You maintain the biosafety permits up to date
- You ensure compliance of the biobank activities
Profile
- A Master degree and/or a PhD in life sciences, with experience in the area of infectious diseases
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, with experience in clinical trials.
- Experience with BSL-2 and BSL-3 lab environment
- Experience with method and equipment validation
- Knowledge of GCP, GMP, and GCLP
- Outstanding organisational and presentation skills
- Able to manage complex projects, multi-task and plan strategically
- Ability for decision-making, problem solving and to have a foresight into potential issues is required
- Skills with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. You are fluent in Dutch and English. Fluency in French is an asset
What we offer
- We offer a fulltime appointment for an unlimited period based on a positive interim evaluation. A part-time appointment is a possibility and can be discussed. The pay scale of your appointment is determined on the basis of your professional experience.

- You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
